About me

I often get asked how I got into hypnotherapy. I used to be a nurse and, like many others in the profession, I suffered a back injury.

During time off work, I looked into ways of improving my problem. I tried out the Alexander Technique and yoga, and it started me thinking more about mind/body approaches to wellness.

Even as a student nurse, I’d been interested in counselling. I’d noticed my patients’ emotional problems were just as distressing to them as their physical ones, but I didn’t really understand how simply talking about problems made things better.

Discovering hypnotherapy and the way it involved treating the patient felt like the missing piece in the jigsaw.

Nursing and hypnotherapy

My nursing background has truly been invaluable to my work as a hypnotherapist. It means I still have a healthy scepticism of complementary approaches to health. I can be objective about what I do, so I can give patients the most effective treatments every time.

Most importantly though, my nursing experience helps me sit with people who are going through difficult emotions and tough times. People can be afraid of strong negative feelings – some therapists, even. As an intensive care sister, I was present with those going through some of the most painful experiences of their lives. So, I’m never scared of emotions. And I can also be suitably direct with people when it can help things move on.
